Le Grand Pioneer Heritage Library Director Job Description


This is a part-time position of 23-26 hours per week. Starting pay is $18 per hour. IPERS are included in the benefit package. The library is located in Le Grand, Iowa with 700 patrons.


Supervises the day-to-day operations, service objectives, and marketing of library programs.

Plans and implements goals, policies, and procedures and determines improvements to customer service, staff relations, finances, etc.

Work all areas of service in the library.

Library Services

Plans, implements, and evaluates library services and makes recommendations for improvement.

Oversees the selection, purchase, cataloging, and weeding of all books and materials in the library.

Uses library reviewing tools to select collection materials.

Plans library programs, purchases support materials and online resources and puts together displays. Programs will be for children, teens and/or adults.


Hires, evaluates, and disciplines library staff members. Supervises staff by providing work assignments and reviews, disciplinary processes, and evaluates performance.

Board of Trustees

Informs the Board of Trustees of progress, plans, and problems involving the library.

Prepares reports to the Library Board concerning but not limited to: library use, finances, staff issues, legislative concerns, State Library of Iowa information, etc.


Implements the control and effective use of the physical and financial resources of the library.

Prepares the annual budget for presentation to the Library Board, presents board approved budget to city council if requested and manages the library budget.


Maintains open communication with the Mayor, City Clerk/Treasurer, City Council, the Marshall County Supervisors, and other libraries.

Maintains membership in Marshall County Libraries Association and attends meetings.

Professional Development

Maintains State Library of Iowa Endorsement (Certification) at level determined by Library Board.

Participates in area, state, and national library associations and activities.


Proficient with photocopiers, printers, computers, popular library software, internet, library website and digital communications.

Maintains current Integrated Library System (CIRC/CAT), provides updates as needed.

Has knowledge of basic cataloging operations and familiar with on-line and ILS provided MARC records.

Familiar with remote learning, video conferencing, social media and be able to use these to provide additional opportunities for library patrons and the community.

Minimum qualifications:

Completed or willing to complete within two years of hiring, Public Library Endorsement offered by the State Library of Iowa.

Two years of experience in an accredited library.

Must pass background & drug screening prior to Employment. Equal Opportunity Employer.
